Mistrezz goes further and lets you start chatting with no account at all, on each character's mildest tier. Replika adds a twist of its own: its terms describe Free Use as a limited plan for those who can't afford to subscribe, and say Replika may turn anyone down for it. At the stingy end, Candy's free account stops after five messages, closer to a first date than a free tier. The best news is that several free tiers ask for no card, Nomi and Promptchan among them, so there is nothing to forget to cancel.

What stays behind the paywall

A free girlfriend is mostly a text girlfriend. Voice is the clearest case: Nomi saves voice notes and live calls for subscribers, Replika files voice messages, calls and premium voices under Pro, and Promptchan spends your Gems on every note and call. Video sits on paid plans too, whether it is Nomi's clips or the video studio Promptchan reserves for Pro, and so do group chats, extra companions and unlimited messages.

One lock matters more than it looks: privacy for pictures. Generating privately on Promptchan needs a paid plan, so whatever a free account creates is made in public, where other members can borrow it and the company keeps a lasting licence to use it. At Mistrezz, text is unlimited once you subscribe, but pictures, voice minutes and new personality tiers all cost crowns. Promotional prices at Promptchan appear only at checkout, and Nomi's wiki notes that a web subscription may cost a little less than one bought through Apple or Google, depending on exchange rates.

The free-tier traps

Vague caps come first. A daily limit that is never written in numbers, like the one on Nastia's free plan, turns comparisons into guesswork. Contradictions come second: Nastia's pages disagree on whether voice notes are free, so trust what the app shows you over what the advert says. The downgrade comes third. Stop paying at Nomi and your companions and one-to-one chat stay, while voice, video and group chats turn read-only; at Replika, a payment more than a week late sends you back to Free Use.

Last, be wary of anything called free that asks for your card. Treat it as a paid plan with a renewal date until the terms prove otherwise, write that date down, and cancel through whoever took the money, since removing the app from your phone stops nothing. A free tier that wants no card at all is the safer kind of free.
