AI girlfriend roleplay: stories you write together, one scene at a time
Roleplay turns an AI girlfriend from someone you chat with into someone you share a story with: a slow-burn romance, a fantasy quest, a night that only exists between the two of you. Here is what separates a good AI roleplay chat from a forgetful one, what the rules allow and what long stories cost.

Why a shared story changes everything
Plain chat is a conversation; roleplay is a scene. You agree on a setting and a situation, she plays her part, and the story moves because both of you push it along. It is the difference between texting someone and going on an adventure with them, and for many people it is the moment an AI companion stops feeling like a chatbot.
Good roleplay partners share a few habits. They stay in character when the plot gets tense, remember who said what three scenes ago, add twists of their own instead of only echoing you, and let you step outside the story to fix something without losing the thread. The list above favours apps that do these things well, with our first pick as the safest place to start.
A ready-made stage or a world you build
Some apps hand you a stage. Promptchan AI comes with more than 50 prewritten scenes and a Story mode in which you narrate and she writes what happens next, handy on nights when you have the mood but no plot. Characters from its public gallery arrive with a backstory and an opening line, so the very first message already sits inside the scene.
Others give you a blank page. Nomi lets you write a custom backstory and keep shared notes that shape how your companion behaves, and Nastia AI gives her a written past to draw on during chats. Building takes longer, but a world you wrote yourself tends to hold together better, because she works from your notes rather than from a template.
One trap before you start: on Promptchan, moving between Chat mode and Story mode wipes the conversation history. Choose the format first, then let the story get good.
Memory is what holds the plot together
A long story lives or dies on continuity. If she forgets the name of the inn, the betrayal two chapters back or the promise you made by the river, the world collapses into pleasant improvisation. Look for apps that explain memory in plain terms: Nomi describes three layers of recall, plus what it calls an Identity Core so she grows without turning into someone else, and a Mind Map you can open and browse.
Treat big claims with care. Nastia's own pages disagree about how long details last, from never resetting to around two weeks, which is a good reason to keep the facts of your story somewhere she reads every time, such as a backstory or shared notes, rather than trusting the chat log to carry them.
Steering a scene without breaking it
Every roleplay drifts sooner or later, and the better apps give you a steering wheel. Nomi's out-of-character mode lets you step out of the scene to correct a detail, Nastia AI has a chat reset for stories that have gone off the rails, and on Promptchan you can switch the writing model, rework her temperament or swap the whole scenario without leaving the chat. Its v2.5 Pro model writes longer, more immersive replies, while v2.5 Fast suits quick banter.
How you write steers the story too. Give her something to react to: a line of dialogue, a knock at the door, a choice she has to make. Short, flat prompts tend to get short, flat answers, while a paragraph of scene usually earns a paragraph back.
Group scenes and bigger casts
Some stories need more than two people. A Nomi subscription holds up to ten companions who can share a group chat, which Nomi's fantasy page suggests for long campaigns, and Nastia's paid plans add group chats with up to 10 characters. It is the nearest thing to a tabletop night where every other player already knows the plot.
Bigger casts cost more than they look. Group chats sit behind the subscription on both apps, and if you stop paying, Nomi switches group chats to read-only while your one-to-one conversations stay free.
Where the stage ends
Roleplay is fiction, and adult apps give it plenty of room, but the same limits turn up in almost every rulebook. Characters must be adults, real people and celebrities cannot be copied without their agreement, storylines between relatives are off the table, and so are animals and extreme gore. Nastia's rules add that any dynamic, gentle or dominant, has to stay consensual.
Filters read what you write and what comes back, so a scene that brushes against those lines may meet a refusal or a sudden change of subject. If your taste runs to sweeping romance, dark fantasy or slow seduction between adults, you will rarely notice them.
What a long story costs
Roleplay uses a lot of messages, so the way an app charges for them matters more here than anywhere. Flat plans are the calm option: Nomi is $15.99 for a month or $99.99 for a year of unlimited messaging, and Nastia's Unlimited plan costs $15.99. Promptchan keeps unlimited chat for Pro at $33.99, and its cheaper tiers stretch the allowance without lifting the cap.
Pictures of the scene can add a second meter. Nomi charges a credit for every selfie past your daily allowance, and on Promptchan only Pro lists unlimited casual generations. Start free, see whether her storytelling holds up over a few evenings, and pay once you want the next chapter.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between AI roleplay chat and ordinary companion chat?
Companion chat is a conversation between the two of you as yourselves. Roleplay puts you both inside a story, with a setting, characters and a plot that moves. Many apps do both, and some, such as Promptchan AI with its separate Story mode, treat them as different formats.
Can several characters join the same roleplay?
On some apps, yes. Nomi lets subscribers bring several of their companions into one group chat, up to ten in total, and Nastia AI adds group chats with up to 10 characters on its paid plans. Free accounts usually stay one-to-one.
How do I fix it when she forgets part of the story?
Use whatever the app gives you: an out-of-character mode to correct the detail, shared notes or a backstory she reads during chats, or a reset when a scene is beyond saving. Writing key facts into notes works better than repeating them in the chat.
Can I roleplay with a character based on a real person?
Not on apps that publish proper rules. Lookalikes of celebrities and private people are banned unless they agreed, and Replika's terms require written consent before a companion imitates a specific real person. Characters you invent yourself are the way to go.
Is AI girlfriend roleplay free?
You can usually start for free, but long stories tend to need a plan. Free tiers ration messages, group scenes are a paid feature and pictures from the scene cost credits or Gems. A flat monthly plan with unlimited messages suits heavy roleplay best.
